I know this site has that feature, but for those wishing to play in tournaments elsewhere on the web, the International Society of E-Mail Chess Tournaments is a new place to compete for free. The group os just starting out, so there won't be too many people to compete with, but as more people join, it should become a great place to play chess tournaments by e-Mail, whether you enjoy competitive play or just recreational tournaments.
There are also three different types of tournaments. There is the round robin system used here; a knock-out system; and once the site becomes more popular, the swiss-system.
