Advanced strategy in the endgame by Jan van Reek
Lesson 6: Blockade by the knight
Botvinnik, Mikhail - Petrosian, Tigran (1963)
The knight can be far stronger than other pieces as a blockader, because his influence is not affected in closed positions. The knight always restricts the opponent. An example gives clarification. Botvinnik thought that he had a favourable adjourned position due to the occupation of the centre. A second with a different opinion was sent away. However, Euwe already mentioned the vulnerability of the isolated pawn centre in the 1920's. 42. Bc2 !Pawn e4 needs overprotection. Bf7 ! 43. Nfe3 c5 !Petrosian's prepared move. 44. d5 Ne5 45. Rf1 ?
