Advanced strategy in the endgame by Jan van Reek
Lesson 9: Consolidation
Botvinnik, Mikhail - Euwe, Max (1946)
The protection of the own territory is called consolidation. I distinguish passive consolidation, if the aim is only defensive, and active consolidation, if an attack is prepared. Black has a distant passed pawn in a rook endgame. He threatens to defeat the opponent by zugzwang. White has to try to preserve his territory. He threatens to play h5, followed by exchange and a decrease of the pressure. h6 ?![ Better chances are offered by Rc5 !(Flohr ) 41. e5 !The new move h6 !brings active consolidation. Black improves his position, while White cannot do anything.[ Kd5 ?! 42. Re3 ?[Correct is 42. h5 ! Rc6 43. hxg6 hxg6 44. Re3 Ke6 45. Rc3 Rc8 46. Kg5 Kxe5 47.
